Nina M. Trinquet,
Accredited Practicing Dietitian, BAppSci, BBiomedSc (Hons), MDiet
Ph.D. candidate
I’m Nina, an Accredited Practicing Dietitian in Melbourne, Australia. I love what I do! I help people prevent, treat, and even reverse many lifestyle-related chronic health conditions, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. I’m very passionate about this, and in fact, I have made it my life’s mission to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease in Australia. Let me tell you my story…
I initially went to university to become a prosthetist/orthotist, which involves creating replacement limbs and supportive devices for patients.
It was towards the end of my Master's degree when I realised most patients were amputees due to lifestyle-related chronic disease, particularly poorly managed type 2 diabetes.
It was at this stage where I happen to come across a documentary that demonstrated the benefits of eating a healthy, whole food plant-based diet for the treatment and reversal of some of the most common chronic diseases in Western countries, including type 2 diabetes.
I realised most of the patients I had been seeing on placement could have potentially avoided amputation, and really improved their quality of life with the right nutrition and lifestyle. I became fascinated with the work of some of the leaders in nutrition, including the ability to reverse the number one cause of death in not only the world, but in my own family – cardiovascular disease.
This is where my spark in nutrition started and why I became a dietitian.
My mission is to reduce heart disease and the burden it has on people’s lives, which is where the name ‘cor’ comes from. It is latin for ‘heart’.
When implemented correctly, a whole food plant-based diet is the only dietary pattern that has been shown to reverse heart disease in the majority of patients. Many people have achieved this, and as a result they feel, look and are healthier and able to do the things they love to do. The closer you get to eating this way, the better the results.
I work with people one-on-one to help them understand the relationship between diet and disease, and guide them in transitioning their nutrition and lifestyle to help them achieve the best possible health outcomes. Being able to sustain your diet and lifestyle is key to preventing and reversing chronic disease, and maintaining long-term health.
Having worked in research and as a Ph.D. candidate, I use the most recent, up to date evidence and do not go along with the current trends and beliefs or what people want to hear. It can be quite scary seeing a dietitian for the first time. Let me reassure you, I treat my clients as I would want my own family to be treated. I am non-judgemental and take a holistic approach and work with my clients to meet their goals and needs.
